Just know: it's anyone ages 18-26, male or female. You know who you are. You know who your brothers, sisters, lovers, sons, daughters, roommates, friends, and co-workers are. And if you do not want them sent off to have their lives wasted for the bogus purposes of a man who was not elected president, I highly recommend you write your congressperson a letter.

Dude, bring it fucking on, as our so-called president would say. The draft is perhaps the only thing that will engage enough of the country to make a difference. When GWB has to explain why his 18-26 year old daughters aren't fighting his wars, and when entire campuses shut down in protest, and thousands of us get thrown in the pokey for conscientious objection, THAT is when the "peace movement" will find a coherent voice and we'll make some real progress.... which is why it's not gonna happen.

you really think Rangel is right on this one? I have seen so many terrible things happen in the last few years that I can't help but think that this will go down without a bang, but a whimper.
que voy hacer, je ne sais pas
que voy hacer, je ne sais plus...
bacon is one of the names on that list, is it not?

From what I understand, the proposal was introduced by democrats as a sort of "wake-up call", with no intention of actually getting it passed. I'm not saying that there isn't a chance of it somehow still going through (this country has seen more unlikely things happen), but the scare-tactic context might shed a different light on it.

Although this is potentially a real issue, and Bush really is an asshole who I personally need to be tortured with the death of 1000 cuts, there is no imminent danger of this bill actually passing. Like bacon said, it would piss off too many people.
For the record, I will be 27 in June 2005. Wow. I'm old.

Kermix is right - Rangel proposed that bill, (I believe) before we even invaded Iraq, as a rhetorical device. The bill won't go anywhere, because it's bad politics for both sides. But it does make for an excellent conversation piece at dinnertime, now don't it?
